Scout Review

Written by AI from measured evidence, scored out of 100.

ThisVid Downloader is a competent, no-frills browser extension designed specifically for one job: saving supported videos from ThisVid as clean MP4 files. It excels at reliable stream detection where broader tools fail, offers convenient in-player and context menu options, and keeps everything inside the browser. Strengths include multi-browser support, quality selection, and simplicity for non-technical users. Weaknesses are its very recent launch, limited trial model, lack of true batch downloading, dependency on playing the video first, and the niche/privacy concerns inherent to the domain. It's a solid 72/100 tool that does exactly what it promises for its target audience of offline archivists.

Measure by measure

Usability

Simple workflow: play video, click button or use popup, select quality, download as MP4. Supports many browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Brave, etc.). Must play video first to detect stream. Trial with 3 free downloads.

Design

Clean browser extension UI with in-player download button, popup quality selector, context menu, and notifications. Functional but minimalistic with no fancy visuals or dark mode mentions.

Speed

Real-time HLS interception and direct MP4 export. Download speed depends on ThisVid servers and your connection. Automatic retries mentioned in some reviews but not core docs. No built-in accelerator.

Security

Runs locally in browser with no telemetry claimed in reviews. Requires permission to access ThisVid pages. Proprietary license. Only works on content you can already play (no private video bypass). Trial requires email signup.

Accessibility

Growth

Very new project (registered ~1 week ago) with rapid version releases (v1 to v4). Active GitHub, SourceForge hosting, cross-browser support, and targeted marketing for a specific pain point. Low user base but high relevance in niche.

Improvement areas

True batch/queue downloading capability missing despite some claims
Very new project with limited user base, reviews, and proven long-term reliability
Trial model and proprietary license may deter some privacy-conscious users

Design & Usability

ThisVid Downloader is a focused browser extension that injects a download button directly into the ThisVid player and offers a popup with available quality options. It uses flashvars extraction and real-time HLS interception to reliably detect streams that generic tools often miss. Installation involves grabbing a zip from GitHub releases and loading it – no store listing for obvious reasons. The interface is straightforward: play the video, let it detect, pick MP4 quality, save to a dedicated THISVID folder with desktop notifications. It supports Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Brave and more. Usability is solid for its purpose but requires playback to start detection and only works on accessible content. No batch download despite some marketing mentions, which is a notable gap for power users.

Speed & Security

Performance is acceptable but tied to ThisVid's variable server quality and your internet. It exports clean MP4 without re-encoding. Security is mostly local but the project is brand new with a proprietary license and email-based trial unlock after 3 free uses. No major red flags in packet sniffing claims from reviews, but downloading adult content via any extension carries inherent risks. It beats fiddling with network tabs or unstable online downloaders. Retry logic gets praise in user feedback for flaky connections.

Accessibility & Growth

Accessibility is average for a browser extension – it inherits browser capabilities but lacks dedicated features or testing mentions. Growth is surprisingly strong for a brand-new tool: multiple quick iterations, presence on SourceForge, GitHub, Apify, and targeted SEO/YouTube promotion. It fills a real gap because ThisVid's user-uploaded content frequently disappears and generic downloaders struggle with its player variations. While user numbers are currently low, the dedicated THISVID folder and notifications show thoughtful touches for repeat archival users.

Conclusion

If you spend any real time on ThisVid and hate losing videos to deletion, this extension is worth the trial. Just remember: only download what you're allowed to keep. For most users, the convenience beats scripts or dev tools. Not revolutionary, but genuinely useful in its lane.

Suggestions for improvement

Add true batch/queue downloading with playlist support to match target customer needs
Provide a proper web store listing or clearer privacy policy to build trust
Implement faster download options like parallel connections or aria2 integration
Expand quality handling with format conversion (e.g. to WebM or audio-only)
