About this app

Photo Pattern Maker is a cross stitch pattern maker that turns your own photo into a printable chart in real DMC colors. The free preview shows the photo as the finished stitched piece before you buy anything, and the first pattern is free with no sign-up. The PDF has a symbol in every square, bold lines every 10 stitches, row and column numbers, a color key with DMC codes and counts, and the finished size. The same photo also works for needlepoint, Perler and Hama bead patterns, crochet graphs, knitting charts, LEGO mosaics and diamond painting. Colors are matched with a color algorithm, not AI image generation. After the free patterns, one pattern is $1.99 or from $0.20 with credits. I built it myself.

Key features

  • 1Photo-to-chart conversion across nine crafts (cross stitch, needlepoint, Perler, mini Perler, crochet, filet, knitting, LEGO, diamond painting) from one upload.
  • 2Free finished-look preview before payment; first pattern free with no sign-up, then €1.99 or from €0.20 with credits.
  • 3Printable PDF with symbol per square, 10×10 bold grid lines, row/column numbers, DMC color key with counts and skein estimates.

Pain points

Separate tools for each craft; inconsistent color brand support

Primary needs

One-photo upload that works across multiple crafts with brand-specific codes

Scout Review

Written by AI from measured evidence, scored out of 100.

Photo Pattern Maker is a focused, well-built indie tool that does one thing clearly: turn your photo into a printable chart in real brand colors, across nine crafts, with a free preview before you pay. The engineering discipline shows — 96/100 mobile Lighthouse, a clean security header stack, and a pricing model that refuses the subscription trap. The weaknesses are presentation and reach: dense lower-page copy, tiny low-contrast captions, a missing DMARC record, and no accessibility statement. None of those are dealbreakers for a crafter who just wants a clean chart of her dog. They are the difference between a good tool and one that gets found.

Measure by measure

Usability

68

Free preview before payment, no sign-up for the first pattern, and 'Make one like this' links that actually route to the generator. The lower half buries the one action visitors want under a spec table and changelog.

Design

70

Confident poster-style hero, a tool card that is unmistakably the focal point, and a pixel-chart motif that runs from preview to gallery. Held back by tiny low-contrast captions and an unlabeled '€' header control.

Speed

88

Lighthouse mobile 96/100 with LCP 2.7s, CLS 0 and TBT 0ms; desktop 99/100. Photos are downscaled to 600px on-device before upload, so the heavy work never hits the wire.

Security

76

Full header stack — HSTS, CSP, frame protection, Referrer and Permissions policies — plus Stripe checkout and a stated 30-day photo deletion policy. DMARC is the one gap in an otherwise clean 11/12 probe.

Accessibility

80

Lighthouse accessibility 100/100 on automated checks, with a responsive layout and readable core contrast. No WCAG statement, no language switcher, and the low-contrast gallery captions the visual audit flagged are exactly what axe can't catch.

Growth

62

One upload, nine crafts, and a €1.99 no-subscription price that undercuts the subscription tools. A real wedge against Pic2Pat and Stitch Fiddle — the question is whether crafters find it before the incumbents notice.

Improvement areas

  • Gallery captions, spec lines and photo credits are too small and low-contrast — a legibility fix that also helps accessibility.
  • Missing DMARC record leaves the domain open to email spoofing despite an otherwise strong header stack.
  • Dense spec table and changelog between gallery and 'How it works' dilute the tool-first focus on the homepage.

Design & Usability

The design knows exactly what it is: a poster headline, a tool card that owns the page, and a pixel-chart motif that ties the hero preview to a nine-item gallery of real patterns. The 'GET MY PATTERN FREE' bar is the strongest element on the page and it earns that. Usability follows the same logic — free preview, no sign-up, no card, and 'Make one like this' links that drop you straight into the generator. Where it slips is the lower half: a spec table, a changelog and SEO copy sit between the gallery and 'How it works', and the gallery captions are set so small and gray they're nearly decorative. The tool-first focus gets diluted right where a hesitant buyer needs reassurance.

Speed & Security

Speed is the standout. Lighthouse mobile 96/100 with LCP 2.7s, CLS 0 and TBT 0ms; desktop 99/100. The on-device 600px downscale before upload means the heavy lifting never touches the network, which is the right call for a photo tool. Security is close behind: HTTPS enforced with HSTS, CSP, frame protection, Referrer and Permissions policies — 11 of 12 probe points — plus Stripe handling checkout and a stated 30-day photo deletion window with user-controlled deletion. The one gap is a missing DMARC record, which leaves the domain open to spoofing in email even though the web surface is well locked down.

Accessibility & Growth

Accessibility scores 100/100 on Lighthouse's automated axe-core checks, and the responsive layout and core contrast hold up. But automated checks only cover part of WCAG: there's no accessibility statement, no language switcher, and the low-contrast gallery captions the visual audit flagged are precisely the kind of thing axe doesn't catch. Growth is the more interesting question. The category is cross-stitch chart generators — Pic2Pat is free but cross-stitch only, Stitch Fiddle is freemium but manual and steep. Photo Pattern Maker's wedge is real: one upload, nine crafts, brand-specific codes (DMC, Perler, Hama, Artkal, Red Heart, LEGO), and a €1.99 no-subscription price with €0.20/pattern credits. That's a differentiated position against both listed alternatives. The limit is distribution — a domain registered in late 2026 and a single social profile means the wedge has to be found before it can compound.

Conclusion

If you're a cross stitcher who has ever squinted at a confetti-heavy free chart and given up, this is worth the two euros. The free preview means you risk nothing to find out whether the color algorithm handles your photo — and the nine-craft support means the same upload can become a Perler bead portrait or a diamond painting without a second trip. The product is competent and honest about what it is. What it needs next is distribution and a pass on the small print — literally, the small print in the gallery captions.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Add a DMARC record to close the last gap in an otherwise clean security header stack.
  • Raise the contrast and size of gallery captions, spec lines and photo credits — they're the weakest legibility point on the page.
  • Move the spec table and changelog below 'How it works' so the tool-first focus survives the scroll.
  • Publish a short accessibility statement and consider a language switcher to match the currency selector's localization intent.
